Kiwi Paul Coll is officially atop the squash world, after being confirmed as the No.1 ranked mens' player.

In the Professional Squash Association's March rankings, Coll has advanced from the No. 2 spot, ending the domination of Egypt's Ali Farag.

It is the first time a New Zealand men's player has reached the pinnacle ranking in the sport. Previously Dame Susan Devoy, Leilani Rorani and Carol Owens were ranked women's No 1.

The achievement caps a remarkable six months for the Westport native, whose British Open victory in August earned him a nomination for Sportsman of the Year at last week's Halberg Awards.

"I can't really put into words the feeling I have, becoming world No. 1," Cool says.  "It's something that I've dreamed of my whole career but it's never really been within grabs until the last 10 months. It's pretty surreal.

"I’m super proud and I want to thank everyone who supported me on my journey from when I was a junior until now.

"It's been a long journey and I'm super excited and thanks everyone for the support."

After almost three years away from the country due to travel restrictions and tournament play, Coll hopes to return to New Zealand at some stage later this year.

The 29-year-old is currently competing at the Windy City Open in Chicago, where he'll take on fifth-ranked Egyptian Tarek Momen in the semi-finals.
