The All Whites will face Costa Rica in an intercontinental World Cup qualifier at Doha, Qatar on June 15 (NZ time), where a win would book their spot in Qatar later this year.

New Zealand took a big step towards qualifying for the tournament for the first time since 2010, after progressing through Oceania qualification with a 100 percent record.

Costa Rica finished fourth in the CONCACAF qualifying standings and are 31st in FIFA rankings, compared to New Zealand's 101st.

The winners of the playoff will enter Group E, which features four-time champions Germany, 2010 winners Spain and Japan.

The other intercontinental play-off has either Australia or the UAE from Asia playing Peru from South America.

New Zealand have only qualified for the World Cup twice - in Spain 1982 and South Africa 2010.
