NRL 2022: NZ-born Jesse Arthars thriving in NZ Warriors culture, coy on permanent move

With three tries in four outings for NZ Warriors this year, centre Jesse Arthars has been a key cog in their recent success and has fans hoping his loan move could become a permanent one.

The 23-year-old is on a one-year loan deal from Brisbane Broncos, whom he ironically scored twice against in their 20-6 win this month.

In the early stages of his career, Arthars has often found himself in the right place at the right time, playing off halfback Shaun Johnson, and admits that relationship is still a bit surreal.

“Even the first day I came here and met Shauny, I was just starstruck," he said. "To now be able to play with him is pretty wicked."

As a teenager, Arthars and his family moved from Auckland to Australia, where he bounced around the NRL system, with stints at Melbourne Storm, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Gold Coast Titans and the Broncos.

Reconnecting to his Kiwi roots at the club he grew up watching has been a special experience.

“I've been in Australia for a long time now. To be back at this club, and represent New Zealand  and around Māori culture has been really refreshing.

"As a young kid growing up I always remember turning the TV on and watching the Warriors on the weekends. I had the jerseys back in the day - me and my brothers used to run around in them.

“Just being a Kiwi and being able to represent the Warriors is massive. As someone that’s been in Australia for a long time, I never thought I'd get the opportunity.”

When the opportunity presented itself, he didn’t think twice.

“It sort of worked out," said Arthars. "When the opportunity did come up, I’d just resigned.

"I had a good chat with [Warriors football general manager Craig Hodges]  about the situation. For me, as a young Kiwi bloke, taking up this deal wasn’t that hard a choice.”

It’s certainly paid off so far. After missing round one through injury, Arthars has started every game, but is keeping his cards close to his chest about an extended stay.

“It’s been really exciting, not just for myself, but for my family. I’ve been in rugby league systems for a while now and anything can happen.

“I’m just really enjoying my footy, especially here at the club. We’ll just see what the future holds.”
