NRL 2022: NZ Warriors apologise for 'unacceptable' homophobic slur, reveal player responsible

NZ Warriors have issued an apology for the "unacceptable" slur captured during their NRL clash with North Queensland Cowboys on Friday, revealing wing Marcelo Montoya was the player responsible.

Montoya was caught on the broadcast using a homophobic insult towards Cowboys counterpart Kyle Feldt, as the wing lay injured as a result of his high tackle.

"Get up Kyle, you f****t," Montoya told Feldt.

The 26-year-old Australian has been officially charged with a contrary conduct offence for the comment and will face the NRL judiciary.

"Both Marcelo and the club are extremely apologetic for the offence this has caused. It was unacceptable," said Warriors chief executive Cam George.

"Marcelo accepts responsibility and knows there's no place for such behaviour both in the game and in society generally."

The incident put a sour note on the Warriors' best performance of the season to date, winning by golden point to claim their third straight victory.
