Commonwealth Games: Global stars Paul Coll, Joelle King headline NZ squash contingent for Birmingham

Seven athletes have been named to the NZ squash side for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, led by global stars Paul Coll and Joelle King.

King, 33, returns to the Commonwealth Games four years after an outstanding campaign that saw her take gold in both singles and doubles, and bronze in the mixed doubles, alongside compatriot Coll.

She also won doubles gold at Delhi 2010 and singles bronze at Glasgow 2014.

"I'm very honoured to be selected for my fourth Commonwealth Games," King said. "I'm hoping to have another huge Games for squash and I'm excited to be part of this team.

"We've got the three of us who have been there before and some youngsters coming through, which is exciting to see them experience it for the first time.

"I'm looking forward to pulling the silver fern over my chest once again."

King is ranked fifth in the world heading to Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Coll will look to go one better than the singles silver medal he won at Gold Coast, returning for his third Commonwealth Games campaign.

In the past four years, Coll has become one of the game's biggest stars, currently ranked world No.1 and winning the British Open twice.

"I'm very happy to be selected for a third Commonwealth Games and I'm looking forward to heading to Birmingham, where I spend a lot of time training with my coach, so it feels like a second home for me," said Coll.

Amanda Landers-Murphy is back to defend her doubles gold medal, won in partnership with King.

Brothers Lwamba and Temwa Chileshe will make their Commonwealth Games debuts, competing together in the men's doubles and singles.

Lwamba, 23, was born in Zimbabwe, but emigrated to New Zealand as a child, while younger brother Temwa, 21, was born in Christchurch, after the family's relocation.

Kaitlyn Watts, 21, and Abbie Palmer, 24, make up the final two selections for the New Zealand contingent. The duo will compete together in the women's doubles, while Watts will also contest singles at Birmingham.
