Cricket: Blackcaps expecting Brendon McCullum to succeed as England test coach, says Tom Blundell

The Blackcaps are certain Brendon McCullum will bring success in his new role as England's test coach, as he prepares to face his former side in his first assignment.

McCullum, 40, was on Friday confirmed to take over as England's new coach in red ball cricket, replacing Chris Silverwood after a run of just one victory from 17 test matches.

And as fate would have it, McCullum's first task will be against the Blackcaps - the side he helped turn into arguably New Zealand's greatest cricket unit after assuming the captaincy at the end of 2012.

But for the Blackcaps themselves, McCullum's move into one of cricket's biggest jobs has been welcomed, with wicketkeeper Tom Blundell expecting the former captain to turn England's fortunes around.

"It's great for Baz," Blundell said. "What he did to our group, and how he built our culture with us, England's going to be in good stead with him.

"He's quite fearless in the way he plays his cricket, the way he played was pretty fearless.

"He just backs you, backs you as a player to just go out and play the way you want to play.

"It's a pretty big step taking the England job, but I think he's going to take it with arms wide open. He's confident, and it's a challenge for him - he loves challenges."

But while McCullum boasts a CV of success in Twenty20 cricket, stepping into tests is another level up.

McCullum guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the final of last year's Indian Premier League (IPL), losing to compatriot Stephen Fleming and Chennai Super Kings, while also winning the Caribbean Premier League with sister team Trinbago Knight Riders in 2020.

Blundell, though, says McCullum's experience in the world's highest profile Twenty20 leagues will equip him to deal with the pressure and expectations of the England job.

What's more, McCullum will form easily test cricket's most attacking captain-coach partnership alongside fellow New Zealander Ben Stokes, England's new test captain.

"The way he played his cricket, he handled pressure really well," Blundell added."No doubt, he can do that as a coach.

"He's coached IPL cricket, it's a little bit different, but I'm sure he'll go well.

"I think those two guys will get on like a house on fire, it's a pretty good combo."

The Blackcaps begin their three test series against England at Lord's on June 2.
