Cricket: Devon Conway, Tim Southee join Blackcaps after warm-up against Sussex rained out

The Blackcaps have welcomed the arrivals of Devon Conway and Tim Southee for next week's first test at Lords.

The pair have joined the New Zealand camp, after their respective Indian Premier League teams failed to reach the playoffs.

While they weren't able to play in the Blackcaps' warm-up against Sussex, which ended in a draw after the final day was rained out, they should get some invaluable time at the wicket against a County XI on Thursday.

New Zealand finished the match on 40 without loss in their second innings, after bowling the locals out for 247.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham was satisfied with the result, as the Blackcaps look ahead to their final warm-up game before the first test.

“It’s a bit disappointing with the rain both day one and day four, but I guess we had two really good days in terms of a bit of time on our legs,” Latham said. “We have another four-day game starting in a few days time, so a nice progression leading into that and obviously into the first test.

“I think it was a really valuable couple of days for us here, especially from a bowling point of view - that competitive nature of bowling in a game rather than in the nets – and I think the batsmen got that as well from the match intensity.”

NZ coach Gary Stead was pleased with his team's efforts, even if they didn't show on the scorecard.

"All the seamers did a good job, not always showing up in the wickets tally, but great for our guys to get out there and have time on their feet.

"I think to bowl Sussex out on what was a pretty flat wicket was a really good performance."

England fast-bowler Ollie Robinson has been picked in the County Select XI to face the tourists at Chelmsford, giving him another chance to show his fitness for a test recall.

Dom Sibley is the only other test-capped player in the 12-man group. Ben Compton has also been called up, after becoming the leading runscorer in Division One with 878 runs at 109.75, after making his Kent debut in April.

County Select XI squad: Jack Blatherwick (Lancashire), Michael Burgess (Warwickshire), Ben Compton (Kent), Ben Gibbon (Worcestershire), Nick Gubbins (Hampshire), Tom Haines (Sussex), Lyndon James (Nottinghamshire), Ryan Patel (Surrey), Liam Patterson-White (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Porter (Essex), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire)
