Equestrian: Kiwi Amanda Pottinger makes strong start as Badminton Horse Trials return from COVID-19 absence

The Badminton Horse Trials have returned for the first time since 2020, with a host of Kiwis once again taking on the famous event in Gloucestershire in the UK.

Among them is the daughter of 1988 Olympic Bronze medallist Tinks Pottinger, Amanda, who has made a strong start in her first Badminton.

For Pottinger, her first Badminton has already surpassed her expectations.

"It's amazing in there," she said. "I certainly tried to block out everything around me, to focus on the job.

"You sort of finish, and you're like 'Woah, we're at Badminton.' It's amazing, it's what we do the sport for."

Pottinger, on her horse Just Kidding, pulled off an impressive 25.9 in the Dressage, to earn a tie for 8th place.

"[It was] way above my expectations," she added. "I was hoping for a sub 30 [finish], nowhere near 25.

"I knew he had this test in him. We've been working on it and [I'm] just stoked to be able to pull it off."

Pottinger's mum claimed bronze at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and Amanda is proving the sport runs in the genes, as she embraces all Badminton has to offer.

"The weirdest thing is just trying to get your bearings," she said. "We've watched this on TV at home for ten years in New Zealand."
