Football: State-of-art facility leaves Phoenix, Wellington sides as envy of sporting world

Wellington Phoenix believe the country's latest multi-million-dollar sports facility will help them entice better players to the club.

The New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport's (NZCIS) new $100 million project opens at the end of this year, and there's a real buzz about the way it could change the game in this country.

It may not look like much now, but in a few months' time the campus will transcend the way teams train in New Zealand with a 70m by 50m state-of-the-art indoor facility to help teams prepare.

From the best training facilities, to the highest in recovery technology. A sports medicine lab, an altitude studio and ultra-modern recovery pools are also being built.

Athletes' training and recovery is front of mind, and they'll get the chance to utilise the 1000-square-metre gym as well.

The $108 million upgrade, which includes accommodation for over 300 people, will be the home of Wellington Rugby, the Hurricanes and both Wellington Phoenix sides.

"It's amazing," Wellington Phoenix women's coach Gemma Lewis told Newshub. "Have you seen this place? It's world-class.

"It's unbelievable here, we're so lucky."

The state-of-the-art facilities will see the Wellington sides as the envy of the sporting world.

"There are some English Premier League clubs that don't have access to some of the gear that's going to be in here," said Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome.

And the Phoenix is hopeful it will help attract top quality players to the club.

"This will be your training base," Lewis added. "This is what we can provide for you - hopefully that will be a selling point to kind-of bring them along to the Phoenix."

The proof will be in the pudding, when the new facility is complete.
