Football: West Ham manager David Moyes shown red card for kicking ball at ballboy in Europa League semi-final loss to Eintracht Frankfurt

West Ham manager David Moyes compounded his side's 1-0 Europa League semi-final loss to German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt by copping a red card for kicking the ball at a ballboy.

In the 79th minute of the second leg between the two sides, and with West Ham 1-0 down on the night and 3-1 down in the tie, Moyes vented his frustration by kicking the ball straight back towards the ballboy, complaining about the speed of the return.

And after a fracas between the two management teams, Moyes was shown a straight red card by the referee, forced to watch the rest of his side's defeat from the stands.

"I kicked a ball back at the ballboy, so I apologise for that," Moyes said post-match. "He threw it very softly at me."

Moyes wasn't West Ham's only red card on the night, after left back Aaron Cresswell was sent off in the first half after denying Frankfurt a goalscoring opportunity, reducing the English side to 10-men for the majority of the second leg.

West Ham's defeat sends Eintracth Frankfurt through to this year's Europa League final, where they'll meet Scottish giants Rangers in Seville on May 19 (NZ time).

Defeat also ends West Ham's slim hopes of reaching next season's Champions League, with the winner of the Europa League awarded a place in Europe's elite competition.
