NRL 2022: Laurie Daley slams referee for not sending off Cronulla Sharks' Jesse Ramien against NZ Warriors

Cronulla Sharks centre Jesse Ramien faces three weeks on the sidelines, after being charged with a grade three careless high tackle in his team's win over NZ Warriors.

Euan Aitken was on the receiving end of a dangerous hit to the head, which saw Ramien binned, after leading with his shoulder.

Fullback Will Kennedy was sent off for a 'coathanger' tackle on Reece Walsh, but Aussie rugby league great Laurie Daley believes the Ramien incident was "far worse" and deserves a bigger punishment.

"I actually think the Sharks should have been down to 11 men," Daley told Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast.

"I know he got sinbinned, Jesse Ramien, but I think that was probably a worse offence than Will Kennedy's.

"I think the referee thought in the back of his mind, 'Jeez, I don't know if I can send another player off', but he made direct contact with his shoulder. For me, that was a head high, it was worse than Will Kennedy's and I thought they should have been down to 11.

"You know what, the Warriors were that bad that the Sharks would have still won, but I reckon the referee got it wrong. I reckon the referee should have sent Jesse Ramien off as well.

"When you actually slow it down, a coathanger for me is when you hit them with a forearm. It was more of a grab around the face, but it deserved a send-off, that's fine.

"But I reckon if Will Kennedy wasn't sent off, Jesse Ramien would have been.

"The fact that they were down to 12, he took the option of sending him to the bin, but I actually thought Jesse Ramien's tackle was far worse, because he got him directly with his shoulder to his head and that did far more damage than what Will Kennedy's did."

If Ramien accepts an early guilty plea, he will be suspended for the next three games or four games, if he fights the case and loses.

Kennedy was also charged with a grade three careless high tackle, but because it was his first offence, he will miss two games, if he accepts an early guilty plea, or three, if he fights the case unsuccessfully.
