Rugby league: Ex-Kiwis half Te Maire Martin to be offered new Broncos contract after NRL return from brain bleed

Former NZ Kiwis half Te Maire Martin's return to the NRL could see him rewarded with a contract extension, Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has let slip.

Martin, 26, was forced to retire from rugby league prematurely at the start of 2020, after the former North Queensland Cowboys half suffered a brain bleed.

But after returning to the game with Waikato Mana in New Zealand's National Competition, Martin was snapped up on a short-term contract by the Broncos.

Injury to fullback Tesi Niu last month saw Martin make his NRL return against Canterbury Bulldogs, before impressing again in last week's 16-7 victory over Cronulla Sharks.

Martin will line up in the Broncos' No.1 jersey again this week, when Brisbane travel to face South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday.

And speaking on Thursday, coach Walters revealed the ex-Kiwi international will be offered the chance to extend his stay in Brisbane beyond this season.

"It's out of my lane, but we expect to re-sign him for a couple of years," he said..

"He's been really good for us, a good pick-up. We didn't know how quickly he could accelerate, but he's playing good footy and since he's been at the back there we look a different team in attack.

"He's helping Adam [Reynolds] in our spine be a little bit more creative; his pass selection is good, skills are great."

Martin has so far made 57 NRL appearances across stints with Penrith Panthers, the Cowboys and now the Broncos.
