The Black Sticks men have announced their 18-strong squad for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Looking to go one better than the silver medal won at Gold Coast 2018, the Black Sticks men will be led by coach Greg Nicol for the first time at a major tournament.

The squad is also boosted by its European core, as captain Blair Tarrant is joined by Kane Russell, Hugo Inglis and Nic Woods, returning for the first time since the Tokyo Olympics.

"We are looking forward to playing in Birmingham and getting back into major tournament mode," Nicol said.

"We have a strong group of players filled with determination, ready to have a crack at ending Australia's 24 year grip on the gold medal.

"We are also excited about bringing an attractive style of hockey to the Games and giving Kiwis another reason to cheer."

Black Sticks men: David Brydon, George Enersen, Sean Findlay, Leon Hayward, Sam Hiha, Sam Lane, Dane Lett, Harry Miskimmin, Joe Morrison, Hayden Phillips, Kane Russell, Aidan Sarikaya, Blair Tarrant, Dylan Thomas, Nick Woods, Simon Yorston
