Cricket: Injured Colin de Grandhomme ruled out of Lord's test after bizarre day three against England

An injury has ruled out Blackcaps all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme for the remainder of the first test against England at Lord's.

It comes after what was a bizarre day three for New Zealand and de Grandhomme as the hosts inch closer to what seemed an unlikely victory.

Daryl Mitchell was the first wicket to fall on day three, shortly after he brought up his ton - bringing de Grandhomme to the crease.

He looked to have survived the first ball after he missed an attempted flick, only for England's Ollie Pope to catch him unaware and run him out at the striker's end.

Whilst de Grandhomme had wandered down the pitch to an English appeal for leg before wicket (LBW), the ball rolled to Pope and the slip fielder made no mistake with the direct hit.

New Zealand would be bowled out for just 285 after an overnight score of 236/4 but it would only get worse for the Blackcaps and de Grandhomme.

England looked to be in all sorts of trouble at 76/4 before de Grandhomme forced a charging Ben Stokes to play a rash shot and play onto his own wicket.

Having scored just one run, it had seemed New Zealand had been spared Stokes' brutality, only for replays to confirm de Grandhomme had overstepped - and by a lot as well.

Stokes would go on to make 54 runs before falling to Kyle Jamieson but the damage had already been done, as his partnership with Joe Root laid the platform for an England fight back.

England needs just 61 runs with five wickets in hand heading into the fourth day.

Just two overs after his no-ball, de Grandhomme was forced to leave the field with a heel injury and has since been ruled out for the rest of the test.

Further scans will reveal if he will be able to take part in the rest of the series.
