Football Ferns outclassed by Norway, fall to defeat in international friendly clash

The Football Ferns have fallen to a 2-0 defeat, losing to Norway in an international friendly clash in Ullevaal.

Dominating possession, it took Norway just over half an hour to open the scoring in front of a passionate home crowd - before sealing the victory five minutes into added time.

Star striker Ada Hegerberg gave the hosts the lead in the 34th minute, after controlling the ball inside New Zealand's area and firing a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Victoria Essen.

Hegerberg, one of the best players in the world, was making her return to the Norway side after five years out of the team due to a dispute with the Norwegian Football Federation.

The Football Ferns looked to have equalised to start the second half, as striker Paige Satchell beat goalkeeper Guro Pettersen with a header from a short corner.

But the goal was chalked off, as Satchell was flagged for offside on the shoulder of the last Norway defender.

Jitka Klimkova's side pressed for an equaliser for the rest of the match, but were undone in the final seconds when defender Guro Bergsvand fired home from a corner, unmarked in the Football Ferns' box.

There will be no qualms over the result from the Football Ferns, who were outplayed in next to every statistic.

Norway had 20 shots to New Zealand's nine, eight shots on target to New Zealand's two, 64 percent possession and 493 successful passes to 285.

The Football Ferns play their second and final match of this international window when they face Wales in Pinatar, Spain on Wednesday morning (NZ time).
