Kiwi Ryan Fox sits one shot off the lead at the European PGA Tour's BMW International Open at Munich, after a second round eight-under.

After a six-under first round, Fox went even better overnight on Friday (NZ time), with six birdies and an eagle to rocket into contention.

The Kiwi sits at 14-under after his first two rounds, and trails leader Haotong Li of China by a single shot leading into the third day's play at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried.

After making four straight pars to begin his second round, Fox made birdie on the fifth to move up the leaderboard.

Then, on the par five sixth hole, Fox came away with an eagle, before finishing his front nine with a birdie on the ninth, four under at the halfway stage of his second round.

Moving to the back nine, Fox progressed even further with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, and added a third in five with another on the 14th.

The Kiwi completed his round with one last birdie on the par five 18th to move to eight-under for the round, albeit after making an eagle on the same hole to finish his first round at six-under.

Fox's efforts come just over a week after failing to make the cut at the US Open in Massachusetts, but the Kiwi will count himself firmly in contention for his second victory of the year, to go with four other top 10 finishes - including two second placings.

The 35-year-old won the Ras Al-Khaimah Classic in February, as well as finishing second at the Dutch Open and Soudal Open in Belgium in May
