NRL 2022: NZ Warriors captain Tohu Harris pledges Kiwi side will restore fans' pride in Mt Smart homecoming

NZ Warriors know they need to front up when they return to Mt Smart Stadium and put in a performance fans can be proud of.

After three seasons based in Australia, due to COVID-19, Sunday will see them run onto Mt Smart for the first time since August 2019, with the club at one of the lowest points in its history.

Amid a run of seven straight defeats, the Warriors have also seen the departure of coach Nathan Brown and forward Matt Lodge, both refusing to relocate to New Zealand.

Now 15 matches into the 2022 NRL season, they have just four wins this year to sit second-to-last on the competition ladder.

But up against the side one place above the - Wests Tigers - captain Tohu Harris knows the team must step up to notch their first victory since April.

"It's important that we put pride back in the jersey," Harris said. "Teams in the past, here at the Warriors, they were teams that fought to the end.

"That's something we've got to show... show that we're willing to put in the effort and that we've got fight in us.

"We know we haven't performed as well as we would have liked, through different reasons. Our effort's one of them, and we've got to show we're putting everything we can out on the field and make our fans proud."

Welcoming the Warriors onto Mt Smart will be a soldout crowd. More than 27,000 tickets have been sold for the encounter, after another sellout for NZ Kiwis' victory over Mate Ma'a Tonga last weekend.

With supporters clamouring to see rugby league's return to New Zealand and the Warriors' return after more than 1000 days away, Harris says the players are grateful support for the club hasn't waned, even during their losing streak.

"It's huge, it says a lot about our fanbase," he continued. "They've always been passionate and they've always been loyal from the beginning of this club.

"It's on us to go out there and make them proud again. Hopefully, we can keep them cheering and keep them loud."

The fixture will be the fourth soldout regular-season match in Warriors history and the first since Simon Mannering's final home match in August 2019.
