Kiwi Paul Coll has fallen in the final of squash's World Tour Finals, losing in straight games to Egypt's Mostafa Asla at Cairo.

In his first appearance in a World Tour Finals decider, Coll, 30, lost 11-13, 8-11, 7-11, unable to deny Asla a second straight title at the event.

"It was obviously very tough here in Egypt," Coll said. "I thought I actually played pretty well.

"I'm a bit disappointed to lose the first [game] and then the back end of the third as well, to lose that so quickly.

"I thought I played pretty well, but he was just very good at the end of every game. Credit to him, he put in another superb performance and held strong in the big points when it mattered."

Defeat brings Coll's 2022 season to an end, finishing with three titles at the Black Ball Open, Windy City Open and British Open.

Coll will now return to New Zealand for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, before contesting the national championships at Tauranga, as part of his build-up to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

"It gives me a lot of motivation to go home and enjoy myself for a couple of weeks first," he added. "I haven't been home for four years.

"I'm just looking forward to going home. I'm going to regroup after that, but I'm so excited to fly home tomorrow, see the family and friends, and just enjoy home."
