Commonwealth Games: Shooting star Grace Nweke cleared to join Silver Ferns at Birmingham

Rising shooter Grace Nweke has been given the green light to join the Silver Ferns in their bid for gold at the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old was in a race for fitness, after injuring her ankle while playing for the Mystics late in the ANZ Premiership season, which sidelined her for three weeks and ruled her out of action for the finals.

While she was named in the 12-strong squad to head to England, Nweke still needed to gain medical clearance to join the camp.

On Thursday, Netball NZ confirmed the "amazing news" that Nweke had passed the requisite return-to-play tests, providing a huge boost for the Silver Ferns' chances of topping the podium.

The four-test international will return to the court in next week's quad-series against NZ Men, NZ 'A' and an invitational side, which will act as a final dress rehearsal for the Commonwealth Games.

Nweke went from strength to strength during the ANZ Premiership, netting 545 goals at a startling 92 percent clip.

She'll face fierce competition for the starting goal shoot bib, with incumbent Maia Wilson tanding in her way.

The Silver Ferns begin their Commonwealth Games campaign against Northern Ireland on July 29.
