Cycling: Kiwi George Bennett forced to withdraw from Tour de France after positive COVID-19 test

Kiwi George Bennett has been forced out of the Tour de France, after testing positive for COVID-19.

UAE Team Emirates rider Bennett, 32, is the second of his team to be forced out, after Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen withdrew last week.

"On Monday night, George displayed some symptoms and, per our protocol, he was tested for COVID-19 and returned a positive result," said team medical director Adrian Rotunno. "Therefore, he will not start today."

Bennett's absence leaves teammate and tour leader Tadej Pogacar without one of his key support riders in his bid for a third straight yellow jersey.

Danish rider Magnus Cort Nielsen won the 10th stage of the Tour, despite a 10-minute halt to the race, when climate change activists attempted to block the road.

Pogacar retained the yellow jersey with an 11-second lead over Germany's Lennard Kamna.

"When you get one positive in your own bubble, then it is just worrying stress," said Pogacar of Bennett's early exit. "I hope we survive until the finish."
