Hockey: Black Sticks women reach World Cup quarter-finals, beat India to finish pool play unbeaten

The Black Sticks women have reached the quarter-finals of the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Spain, defeating India 4-3 to top their pool.

Victory over India, along with a win over England and draw against China, sees the Black Sticks top Pool B, unbeaten entering the knockout stages.

In a frantic start to New Zealand's final pool match, the Black Sticks fell behind early, as India opened the scoring through Vandana Katariya in the third minute.

But Olivia Merry equalised before the end of the first quarter, as Tess Jopp gave the Black Sticks a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Defender Frances Davies put New Zealand 3-1 up in the third from a penalty corner, before India hit back with a field goal to Lalremsiami.

With New Zealand ahead 3-2, Merry scored her second of the game, tucking home from a penalty corner to all but seal victory.

India scored a consolation goal late in the final quarter to Gurjit Kaur to bring the scores to 4-3, but the Black Sticks lead was never really under threat.

Topping their pool gives the Black Sticks an extended break, with nearly a week before their quarter-final.

The four top teams - one from each pool - are given automatic entry into the quarter-finals, while the sides finishing second and third play off to take the remaining spots in the last eight.
