Birmingham Commonwealth Games: Ellesse Andrews' gold rush adds to family medal haul at velodrome

Ellesse Andrews has arrived home in Christchurch fresh off her four-medal haul at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old track cyclist has also added to the household collection of Games medals, after dad Jon won two bronze medals on the track at Auckland 1990.

After a golden trio of contributions to our most successful Commonwealth Games ever, Andrews deserves nothing less than a nice cuppa with her mum.

"It still takes a while to let that sink in and I think, once I get back into my routine, it will be quite nice to look back on the last few weeks and give myself a pat on the back," she told Newshub.

And there's plenty to celebrate, after gold in the team sprint... the individual sprint... and a third gold in the keirin.

Mum Angela is in awe of the new souvenirs, but they're not the first Commonwealth medals to make it home. Jon Andrews won bronze in both the sprint and time trial at Auckland 32 years ago.

It's the only colour Ellesse doesn't have in her collection...

"Ha ha, yep, no bronze yet, but I'll take the gold ones," she laughed.

She wasn't the only one, with New Zealand winning a record 13 medals at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

"To watch your friends, people that you're close with do really well just gives you such a lift, going into your own races," she said.

And Andrews believes the record haul is just the tip of the iceberg, after a year that has seen New Zealand cycling's culture come under the microscope.

"Under all of these results is the hard work and all of the overcoming of adversity, and who people are as human beings as well."

With the Paris Olympics less than two years away, there could be more medals to come.
