Cricket: Family comes first for Blackcaps fast bowler Trent Boult, after release from New Zealand central contract

Family comes first. That's the message from Blackcaps bowler Trent Boult, following his decision to step away from his central contract with New Zealand cricket.

Boult, 33, will now have a significantly reduced role with the Blackcaps, but will still be eligible for selection if and when available.

He also intends to play more domestic cricket for Northern Districts, with NZC chief executive David White suggesting Boult's focus would be on global T20 leagues.

Boult admits his decision to step away is to pay back the many sacrifices his family have made over the years.

"I have a big desire to represent my country, but I fully respect that giving back my national contract will affect my chances of selection," he said.

"But ultimately, this decision has been about my family and putting them first, and I feel like this is the right time to do that.

"I fully respect that being a fast bowler, you have a limited career span. It also comes with a lot of hard work and dedication and sacrifice as well.

"Of course, my young family has made a lot of sacrifices over the years, and I think this is a good chance for me to pay them back in a way and spend more time with them."

Boult is currently with the Blackcaps squad for their tour of the West Indies, but it's unknown his future participation with the national side.

White believes his selection could be limited to "global world events", such as World Cups, but expects him to announce his next destination soon with T20 leagues around the world no doubt vying for his signature.

Boult is looking forward to the next chapter in his life, and concedes it wasn't an easy choice to make, but is grateful for all the support.

"There is life after cricket and I am really looking forward to moving forward into that part of my career," he said.

"Obviously this has been a big decision, a decision that I haven't made lightly but first of all, I'd like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support and helping me get to this stage.

"But ultimately the decision has been about my young family and getting the chance to spend more time with them."
