Motorsport: Kiwi teenager Jared Hudson jets off to Europe as Hayden Paddon's co-driver for British Rally Championship

Often referred to as the silly seat, being a rally co-driver doesn't come with the same glamour as being behind the wheel - but is equally as important.

For 18-year-old Jared Hudson it's in the blood, both his parents and sister are also co-drivers.

On Friday he'll realise a childhood dream, flying out to the UK to make his international debut alongside a driver he's idolised, Hayden Paddon.

With one look at his wall, it's easy to see Hudson is a rally fanatic.

He's now headed to Wales because next week he will go from fanboy to teammate co-driving for Paddon in a round of the British Rally Championship.

"It's an awesome opportunity for me, and something I've wanted to do for a very long time," Hudson told Newshub.

Paddon has to remind himself about just how inexperienced his new co-driver is.

"I have to keep reminding myself that he's only 18," Paddon said. "I remember seeing him around the rally scene for many years.

"Because of that, you actually think he's a lot older than what he is."

In June, Hudson took the silly seat for Paddon at Rally South Canterbury - a big step up for the teenager.

"Once we get into the corners, and he brakes 50 metres later than anyone else, you go 'holy moly, I did not think you could brake that late'.

"It was very cool."

And he made an impression. With Paddon's regular co-driver John Kennard unavailable for the trip to Wales, Hudson got the call-up.

"He's got a few key things," added Paddon. "He's small, and he's lightweight, which is always good for a co-driver."

There's another reason why the 18-year-old is a natural when it comes to calling pace notes.

Jared isn't the only co-driver in the Hudson family. Dad Rocky has been riding in the silly seat for decades and so has mum Lisa. In fact, that's how they met.

Sister Amy is also a co-driver with both kids becoming keen at a young age. Now it's common for all four to be competing at the same event.

"It's our family holiday," said Rocky Hudson. "Often Jared says 'Why can't we go to Fiji?'

"Well no, we're off to Whangarei for the rally.

"It's what we do, that's our family, that's our holidays."

The next family holiday? A father and son trip to Wales as Jared continues to chase his dream of becoming a full-time co-driver in the WRC.
