Blackcaps v Australia: New Zealand fall to comprehensive Chappell-Hadlee series defeat, after 113-run loss at Cairns

The Blackcaps have blown another promising position, falling to a comprehensive Chappell-Hadlee series defeat in the second one-day international at Cairns.

Having been beaten in the series opener just two days before, New Zealand's batters never looked like chasing down the 196 target, losing by a mammoth 113 runs.

The result sees the Blackcaps slip to No.2 in the world, with England regaining their position atop of the ODI rankings.

After winning the toss, Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson opted to bowl, with the decision seemingly paying off immediately.

New Zealand seamers Trent Boult, and Matt Henry carried on their fine form with the ball, combining for seven wickets, to restrict the hosts to 195/9.

But it could have been a much smaller target, if not for the Australian tail wagging, with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood putting on an unbeaten 47-run partnership for the last wicket.

Henry had got the Blackcaps off to the perfect start, picking up the wickets of openers David Warner (5) and captain Aaron Finch (0) in the first three overs, with Williamson taking a couple of smart catches.

Next to fall was Marnus Labuschagne (5), who was trapped in front leg before wicket (LBW) by Boult for the second time in the series.

Boult would have another scalp just a couple of overs later, trapping Marcus Stoinis on his pads, to leave Australia 26/4 after eight overs.

Australia's Alex Carey, fresh off his match-winning knock in the first ODI, was next to go, with Blackcaps wicket-keeper Tom Latham cleverly whipping off the bails to leave him stumped, off the bowling of Mitch Santner.

Steve Smith continued to run out of partners, before an unusually cautious Glenn Maxwell came to the crease to offer some resolve.

Maxwell struck 25 runs, before Martin Guptill took a brilliant catch in the outfield to dislodge him, and add to Boult's wicket tally.

Henry would pick up his third wicket, with Sean Abbott (7) finding Santner in the field, before Smith skied Tim Southee's delivery to fall for an impressive 61 runs.

But Starc and Hazlewood ensured Australia would not be bowled out and would see out their overs, with Adam Zampa (16) also chipping in.

Much like their rivals, New Zealand struggled early with the bat in their chase, losing their first three wickets for just 14 runs in the opening eight overs.

Martin Guptill (2) fell in the very first over to Starc, before Abbott picked up the wicket of Conway (5), bringing skipper Kane Williamson to the crease.

Williamson battled hard, but wickets continued to fall around him, with Latham picking out Finch in the field, and giving Abbott his second.

Daryl Mitchell looked to have ignited a Blackcaps revival, alongside his captain, but Zampa sent the pair packing with his leg spin bowling.

Williamson was the first to fall for 17 runs, after he missed a slow and dipping full toss, before Mitchell was caught LBW, to leave New Zealand 38/5 after 21 overs.

Power-hitting all-rounder Jimmy Neesham (2) fell in the very next over to Stoinis, before Michael Bracewell (12) and Southee (2) departed shortly after.

Zampa outfoxed New Zealand's last two batters, Henry (5) and Boult (9) to claim a five-wicket haul and bowl the visitors out for just 82 runs after 33 overs.

The Blackcaps will be hoping to avoid a series whitewash, with the third and final one-day international at Cairns on Sunday.
