Cycling: Kiwi Corbin Strong loses Tour of Britain lead after dramatic third stage, commissaires review

Kiwi rider Corbin Strong has lost the Tour of Britain lead under controversial circumstances, after a dramatic third-stage finish at Sunderland.

Belgian Kamiel Bonneu emerged from a four-man breakaway to take out the 163.6km journey from Canadian Ben Perry, with the peloton closing fast over the final kilometres.

With an eight-second lead on the start-line, Strong was initially awarded the red jersey for a third straight day, but had the decision reversed by commissaires two hours later, after an official review of the finish.

The Commonwealth Games track gold medallist now trails seven seconds adrift of Perry in second place, but still holds the blues points jersey, with the tour's 'queen stage' looming - 2650m climing over 149.5km from Redcar to Helmsley.

Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Tom Sexton has snatched the Tour of Romania leader's jersey with victory in the 2.1km prologue.

A Birmingham gold medallist in teams pursuit and runner-up to countryman Aaron Gate in the individual event, Sexton was fastest at Satu Mare, clocking 2m 30s, one second clear of Italian Nicolas Dalla Valle, with Gate another second back in fourth.

Sexton will wear the yellow jersey on the 205.2km opening state from Satu Mare to Bistrita.
