Golf: Kiwi Ryan Fox withdraws from European PGA Championship with injury, joins Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose

Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has had to withdraw from the European PGA Championship at Virginia Water, Surrey, after suffering a knee injury between rounds.

The world No.47 carded an opening round of one-over-par 73 at the Wentworth Club, when the tournament was stalled by the death of Queen Elizabeth and shortened to 54 holes.

During the day's break in play, Fox, 35, tweaked his knee and could not front for his second round.

"Unfortunately I injured my knee while at home last night and have had to pull out of the @BMWPGA this weekend," he tweeted. "No cool story, just seemed to be very unlucky.

"I'm getting scans over the weekend to see the extent of the damage and hope to get some good news."

The injury is an unwelcome interruption to the best year of Fox's career, which has seen him improve from 217 in world rankings since January. He won the Ras Al Khaimah Classic in the United Arab Emirates that month and lost the Dutch Open to Frenchman Victor Perez in extra holes.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Englishman Justin Rose have also withdrawn from the tournament before the second round.

Rose, who shot a first-round 73, cited a back injury as his reason for pulling out of the event.

Garcia didn't give a reason, but he was captured by television cameras in Austin, Texas, where he joined US Masters champion Scottie Scheffler on the sidelines before kickoff of Saturday's marquee college football game between Texas and No.1 Alabama.

Garcia has had issues with the DP World Tour this summer, after joining the LIV Golf Series, threatening to quit the DP World Tour, before backing off.

Garcia is scheduled to play next week at the LIV event at Rich Harvest Farms near Chicago.
