Rugby Championship: All Blacks happy to take back seat as AFL finals overshadow Bledisloe Cup

As AFL fever grips Melbourne, the All Blacks are in a rare and unfamiliar position of slipping under the radar in preparation for the first Bledisloe Cup test against the Wallabies.

Based in Melbourne this week, the All Blacks are by no means the star attraction, with the Australian Rules football finals in full swing, as Australia's biggest sport.

In fact, the All Blacks' clash against the Wallabies will be played this Thursday night - the first midweek test against Australia since 1994 - rather than go up against the TV juggernaut of the AFL next weekend.

But for the team themselves, the All Blacks' focus isn't shifting, as the team looks to notch back-to-back wins for the first time this year.

Despite losing to both South Africa and Argentina, the All Blacks are top of the Rugby Championship courtesy of bonus points, as all four sides boast a record of two wins and two defeats apiece.

And even without the spotlight on them from the Australian public, the All Blacks are taking no notice of the outside noise - or lack thereof - as they bid to keep hold of the Bledisloe Cup for another year.

"I don't think it makes a difference to us in the way we want to prepare, to be honest," said Jordie Barrett.

"Whether everyone's talking about us out there or not, we've got a job to do.

"We need to prepare accordingly. There's an Australian side that hasn't had a taste of the Bledisloe in a long time.

"If we're any short of our mark, in terms of preparation, we open ourselves up.

"We're going to nail each day this week."

Meanwhile, brother Scott Barrett says he's prepared for a positional shift, as Shannon Frizell's absence opens the door for him to move from the second row into the loose forwards.

The 28-year-old played in the No.6 jersey in the All Blacks' year opening test against Ireland at Eden Park, a 42-19 win, before injuries to Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick kept Barrett at lock for the rest of the year so far.

"I guess so," Scott added. "If the coaches name me there or say I can cover there, I'll grab that opportunity with two hands."
