Snow sports: Next generation of Kiwi stars emerging in teenage pair Ruby Andrews, Gustav Legnavsky

This year has been monumental for snow sports with Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous claiming our first Winter Olympic gold medals.

But it didn't end there. New Zealand also had its greatest-ever result at the Junior World Championships, with Ruby Andrews and Gustav Legnavsky winning gold.

This week they're back home competing at the Winter Games in Cardrona.

Perfection in the pipe, and plenty of style on the slopes, Ruby Andrews and Gustav Legnavsky are two of New Zealand snow sports' brightest hopes

"There's such an awesome pathway for younger athletes coming through," Andrews told Newshub.

"Zoi and Nico have really set the scene for freeskiing and snowboarding in New Zealand."

"We've definitely come a long way from where we started," added Legnavsky.

For 16-year-old Legnavsky, that began at birth - if not before. His father was on the Slovakian moguls team, and mum was an extreme skier.

"I guess I've been on the snow since I was in the womb," he added.

Seventeen-year-old Andrews is a comparatively late starter, beginning to ski with her family at the age of two.

Those years of practice are paying off. In March she won a junior world title in slopestyle.

"It was incredible. It was everything I could have asked for.

"I went there not expecting any kind of result."

A day later, Legnavsky did the same in the halfpipe.

"My goal my whole life has been to just have fun, see where it takes you and push it to the next level," Legnavsky said.

The pair are hopeful that next level can include a medal at the next Winter Olympics in Italy.

There's no doubt it's an ambitious one, but these two have already shown they're world beaters.
