Wellington dominated possession and went shot-for-shot with Melbourne, but were down 2-0 after just 34 minutes.

Jamie Maclaren opened the scoring after converting from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, before Marco Tilio doubled the lead less than 20 minutes later.

But that Phoenix spurred into action late in the second half, with Sutton and Barbarouses making no mistakes to steal a point.

Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay was pleased to have rescued a draw in a game he felt they dominated, with Wellington still chasing their first win of the season.

"For me honestly I believe we didn't deserve to lose the game," Talay said after the game.

"I thought we started the game off pretty well. We conceded two goals from our own mistakes, turnovers. They hit us well on the counter and scored two goals, other than that I thought we had full control of the game. At moments we played straight through them.

"I think the changes influenced the game and we ended up getting a draw."

Talay praised his side's character to overturn a two goal deficit.

"It's not easy coming to play City away and going two-nil down and coming back and getting yourself back into the game.

"I'm disappointed because I think we started the game off pretty well and allowed them to go ahead with two counter-attacking goals, but the boys were resilient and they worked hard to get themselves back in the game and overall we walk away with a point.

"Hopefully that builds a lot of confidence in the players. They showed that we can play.

"We try to play football, we try to play a certain brand of football and I think the boys executed it well at times, not all the time, but well at times and that should give us a lot of confidence ahead of two home games."
