Constellation Cup: Silver Ferns embark on Cup-clinching mission without breakout star Peta Toeava

After winning the second Constellation Cup match at Tauranga, the Silver Ferns only have to win one of the two remaining games across the Tasman to retain the trophy.

But not only will they have to play in front of two sellout Australian crowds, they'll have to do so without breakout star Peta Toeava, who has emerged as one of the Silver Ferns' most valuable players this series.

As part of their dual-squad arrangement, the Silver Ferns have welcomed Maddy Gordon, Kimiora Poi and Elle Temu on board for their flight to Melbourne for Wednesday's third test, hoping to give as many players as possible a chance to stake their claim for next year's World Cup.

"Our idea is to build towards the World Cup and also give the ones that are in the development squad opportunities to be a part of the environment," said coach Dame Noeline Taurua.

Standout wing attack Toeava, 28, is one of the players only selected for the NZ leg of the series, but exceeded expectations in the first two tests, where her sensational combination with Mystics teammate Grace Nweke was key to both victories.

She also proved to Taurua she's put in the work, since she was overlooked for Birmingham Commonwealth Games selection.

"It's a credit to her and what she's done behind the scenes, her brilliant connection with Grace, and also her work and training ethics, so big ups to her," said Taurua.

They'll now have to fight for the trophy without her, but the Ferns' fresh players are up for the challenge.

"The girls have done so well, like I knew they would, but stepping into those shoes and showing what I can do is on my mind," said Gordon.
