*********

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Blackcaps' Twenty20 World Cup opener, taking on hosts Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Just shy of a year on from the last Twenty20 World Cup, here we are again.

In a repeat of the 2021 final, the Blackcaps and Australia meet once more, after Kiwi hearts were broken in the UAE.

The only potential spoiler for either side tonight will come from the skies, with La Nina delivering a 90 percent chance of rain over the SCG.

Should play get underway, though, the Blackcaps would need to end a winless streak in Australia that dates back to 2011 - with that famous test victory in Hobart.

The New Zealand side does take on a different look from the one of 12 months ago.

Finn Allen and Devon Conway should make up the opening pair, while Lockie Ferguson could play a role after injury saw him out of the 2021 tournament.

Australia meanwhile have more or less the same side from their win last year. Power-hitter Tim David has come into the side in place of Steve Smith, while all-rounder Cameron Green continues to rise up world cricket's standings.

Neither side, though, comes into this match in good form. The Blackcaps lost their one and only warm-up match by nine wickets, after losing the T20 tri-series final against Pakistan.

Australia meanwhile have lost their last four games, falling to defeat away to India before being swept 3-0 at home by England.

But form hardly counts in Twenty20 cricket…

TAB odds: New Zealand $2.70, Australia $1.42

Teams (predicted):

Blackcaps: 1-Finn Allen, 2-Devon Conway (wk), 3-Kane Williamson (c), 4-Glenn Phillips, 5-Mark Chapman, 6-Jimmy Neesham, 7-Michael Bracewell, 8-Mitchell Santner, 9-Tim Southee, 10-Lockie Ferguson, 11-Trent Boult

Australia: 1-David Warner, 2-Aaron Finch (c), 3-Mitchell Marsh, 4-Glenn Maxwell, 5-Marcus Stoinis, 6-Tim David, 7-Matthew Wade (wk), 8-Pat Cummins, 9-Mitchell Starc, 10-Adam Zampa, 11-Josh Hazlewood
