Motorsport: Shane van Gisbergen wins dramatic Bathurst 1000 to edge closer to Supercars Championship title

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has claimed his second Bathurst 1000 victory, with he and co-driver Garth Tander taking the chequered flag at Mount Panorama.

Adding to his only other Bathurst win in 2020, the 33-year-old made a huge statement in his push for a second consecutive Supercars crown, adding his record 19th victory of the season.

The Kiwi became the final driver to win the Bathurst 1000 behind the wheel of a Holden, in their final year as a Supercars manufacturer.

Van Gisbergen wasn't able to take victory without his co-driver, as Tander added a fifth Bathurst title to his collection, along with 57 Supercars wins and 100 podiums, as one of the sport's most storied drivers.

"That's pretty cool, but you're singling me out," said van Gisbergen.

"It's a team effort and a fan effort. All the support for Holden… it's special.

"I just want to go and do another skid. I can't thank the team enough."

Sunday's result, which also saw van Gisbergen take the fastest lap of the race, moves him 567 points clear at the top of the Supercars standings.

Chas Mostert - and Kiwi co-driver Fabian Coulthard - came home in second, while polesitter Cam Waters finished third, unable to add a first Bathurst victory to his two previous runner-up spots.

Waters' podium finish delay the 2022 Supercars title for va Gisbergen, who needed to be 600 points or more clear.

In a chaotic race that saw eight safety cars, van Gisbergen showed why he went into the 'Great Race' with a 525-point Supercars Championship lead.

And even after a grid penalty for an incident in practice and a five-second penalty applied in the race, after an incorrect pit exit from Tander, van Gisbergen still held off challenges from Mostert, Waters and Brodie Kostecki to take victory by just over one second.

Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Richie Stanaway and co-driver Greg Murphy finished 11th, dropping from their qualifying position of fourth.

Chris Pither came home 21st, after a mechanical fault resulted in a late pit stop, while Andre Heimgartner was unfortunate not to feature at all, after co-driver Dale Wood was involved in a collision on the opening laps.

The 2022 Supercars season continues on October 28 with the Gold Coast 500, before the season-ending Adelaide 500.
