NRL: Manly Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler reportedly planning legal action against club over rainbow jersey saga

Manly Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler is reportedly considering legal action against his club, over the rainbow jersey saga during the last NRL season.

In July, seven Sea Eagles players were stood down for their round 20 clash against Sydney Roosters, due to their refusal to don a rainbow jersey in recognition of the LGBT+ community.

The players argued they were not properly consulted over the jerseys, which clashed with their religious beliefs.

Without the seven players the understrength Sea Eagles were beaten 20-10 by the Roosters, and lost all five of their regular season games afterwards to miss out on a finals spot by 10 points.

At the time of the furore, the Sea Eagles were 10th on the NRL ladder, and outside of finals contention on points differential only.

Hasler apologised on behalf of the club for the "mismanagement" of the situation.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, 61-year-old Hasler is planning a $1 million plus lawsuit against Manly, with the argument the saga derailed their season.

Hasler's contract is understood to contain a clause that would extend his deal for an additional year after 2023, should the Sea Eagles finish in the NRL's top six.

After the jersey saga, though, Manly could only finish 11th, with Hasler's future in question in his second stint with the club.

Since Hasler returned to Manly at the start of the 2019 season, the club have finished sixth, 11th fourth and 13th after four inconsistent campaigns.

Hasler's current contract runs through to the end of the 2023 NRL season.
