Rugby league: Mad Butcher's NZ Warriors jersey collection stolen in Mt Smart smash and grab

A collection of NZ Warriors jerseys donated by Sir Peter Leitch - affectionately known as the 'Mad Butcher' - has been stolen from Mt Smart Stadium.

Fourteen jerseys were taken in what Sir Peter describes as a "ram raid" on Tuesday night, with thieves making off with the collection.

"My day has just been shattered," Sir Peter wrote on Facebook.

"Got a phone call from Mt Smart Stadium… 14 of my jerseys that were on display have been stolen in a ram raid overnight.

"If you hear of anyone trying to flog some Warriors jerseys off, please contact me. These jerseys are irreplaceable."

Sir Peter has been an avid supporter of the Warriors since their inception in 1995 and has been dubbed as the team's '19th man'.

Police were called to reports of a burglary at the stadium about 7:30am  Wednesday.

"Police received a report of a burglary that occurred overnight at Mt Smart Stadium on Beasley Avenue," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"Police attended shortly after the burglary was reported. It is understood that a vehicle was used to force entry to gain access through a gate.

"They appear to have taken items from within the premises and stole a vehicle from the premises, causing further damage to two more gates when leaving.

"Police enquiries are continuing."

Auckland Unlimited, who manages Mt Smart Stadium, confirmed to Newshub it was working with police to try and locate the culprits.
