Sport: Winning America's Cup skipper Glenn Ashby chasing land speed world record with help of Team NZ

Glenn Ashby is inching closer to his dream of breaking the land speed world record, with the winning America's Cup skipper working with Emirates Team New Zealand.

After waiting on a lake to dry up, he's now just weeks away from the attempt.

Strapped in the front seat, but completely out of his comfort zone. Racing on land is all part of Ashby's new quest to become world No.1, with the previous record set on American soil in 2009.

"We will absolutely break that record," he said. "That record is actually 202.9km/h believe it or not."

But he is, in almost every way, at the mercy of mother nature.

"To see it dry now and a really, really nice surface is a dream come true to be honest," Ashby said.

And a huge relief, with Ashby documenting the delays and disappointments of the agonising wait. It's only this week the glistening surface of the salt lake is ready.

"Over the next couple of weeks we'll be looking at doing test runs in favourable conditions really," he said.

Horonuku is what he calls the land yacht, to glide swiftly across land, it's now ready to do just that.

And believe it or not, could soon do so at a speed that puts New Zealand in the history books once more.
