Twenty20 World Cup: World reacts to 'Superman' catch from New Zealand's Glenn Phillips as Black Caps beat Australia

The Blackcaps thrashing of Australia in the T20 World Cup opener might've been impressive, but Glen Phillips' outfield catch was "outrageous".

Phillips, 25, is one of New Zealand's best fielders, and is known for his speed and acrobatics, with a history of taking spectacular catches.

The 25-year-old added another "outrageous" catch to his resume, when he caught Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis during the Blackcaps 89-run demolition of the home team in the T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia was already in trouble at 50/3 in the ninth over and behind the asking rate, when Stoinis lofted spinner Mitchell Santner over the infield to a seemingly empty deep cover position, but Phillips sprinted from deep point and launched himself, to grab a spectacular midair catch.

Phillips knew he had pulled off a magic moment, rising straight to his feet and turning to the crowd, with his arms raised in celebration.

"You've got to be kidding me, Glenn Phillips," former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull cried in commentary.

"How good is that?"

Alongside Doull, fellow commentator and former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson also reacted in shock saying: "You've got to be kidding, it's Superman."

"Oh my goodness me… you are joking. That's what dreams are made of, being able to catch something like that."

Social media comments were in awe of the stunning catch, with the ICC saying it was a "superhuman" effort from Phillips.

Cricket Australia tweeted, asking if Phillips' grab was the "catch of the tournament", while another compared him to "Spider-Man".

The Blackcaps cruised to victory, eventually bowling Australia out for 111 for their first win in Australia - in any format - since the 2011 test win in Hobart.

An unbeaten 92 from Devon Conway, and three wickets apiece to Tim Southee (3/6) and Mitchell Santner (3/31) left Australia with no answers, as the Kiwis avenged the 2021 World Cup final defeat in the UAE.

The defeat margin was Australia's largest in terms of runs in a Twenty20 World Cup and sends the Blackcaps to the top of their group in the tournament's Super 12 stage - boasting an emphatic net run rate of 4.450.

New Zealand are next in action in their second group match, against Afghanistan, played on Wednesday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
