Blackcaps v Pakistan: New captain Tim Southee hailed after 350th test wicket

Aside from making his bow as the Blackcaps' new test captain, Tim Southee has also ticked off the milestone of being just the third New Zealander to reach the mark of 350 test wickets.

As Southee trapped centurion Agha Salman in front lbw after lunch on the second day of the first test between the Blackcaps and Pakistan in Karachi, the 34-year-old joined an exclusive club among Kiwi cricketers.

In his 89th test, Southee now has exactly 350 test scalps, sitting only behind Sir Richard Hadlee (431) and Daniel Vettori (361) among New Zealand's leading wicket takers.

Southee finished as the pick of New Zealand's bowlers with 3/69 from just shy of 26 overs, on a pitch that gave next to nothing for the Blackcaps' seam attack.

And with time still on his side, it's conceivable that Southee will overtake Vettori, and puts pressure on Sir Richard at the top of the list before he calls time on his career.

Speaking after the day's play at Karachi's National Stadium, Blackcaps batting coach Luke Ronchi hailed the achievement of Southee, coming after being named as the team's new captain earlier this month.

"That's what Timmy does," he added. "That consistency of going out there with the ball in hand, and asking questions the entire time.

"With the new ball, with the old ball, on flat wickets, on green wickets, he's been doing it for a long, long time.

"He just asks questions, he's as consistent as ever. To get 350 next to his name is a great achievement.

"It's something he'll look at as time goes on, and be really pleased [with] that. But he also knows what he's still got to go ahead - [He's] the new test captain.

"We've got a massive three days left of this test, and another test after that. There's still a lot of cricket to go, but he'll look back at it with some good memories and be really proud of the achievement."

Ronchi also praised the Blackcaps' bowling collective, for taking 10 wickets on a pitch that's seen 603 runs scored on the opening two days.

After Pakistan were bowled out for 438 after lunch on the second day, the Blackcaps have replied with a so far unbroken stand of 165 runs between Tom Latham (78 not out) and Devon Conway (82 not out).

And aside from Southee's efforts, the spin trio of Michael Bracewell (2/72), Ish Sodhi (2/87) and Ajaz Patel (2/112) all chipped in to knock the hosts over in batting friendly conditions.

"That's what it takes in this part of the world, everyone to put in like they did," added Ronchi. "The rewards come and go, some of the bowlers will get wickets, some won't.

"All the guys put in really hard [work] and got some wickets themselves.

"And then for Timmy [Southee] to get 350 test poles, it was a fantastic achievement for someone who's been amazing for the Blackcaps for a long, long time there."
