Blackcaps great Kane Williamson will return to the Indian Premier League but at a discounted price.

Dropped by Sunrisers Hyderabad in November after eight years, Williamson was picked up at Friday's auction by Gujarat Titans, who paid INR 2 crore for his services (NZ$386,000).

Sunrisers paid around 14 crore (NZ$2.68m) to retain Williamson before this year's competition.

England all-rounder Sam Curran became the IPL's most expensive ever buy, returning to the Punjab Kings for the staggering sum of 18.5 crore (NZ$2.7m) following a fierce bidding war involving the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Curran, who was player-of-the-series in England's T20 World Cup triumph in Australia this year, previously featured for the Punjab Kings in 2019.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and England batter Joe Root went unsold, as did a host of NZ players including Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Michael Bracewell, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi and Scott Kuggeleijn.

The Blackcaps players retained by their teams were Tim Southee (Kolkata Knight Riders), Devon Conway (Chennai Super Kings), Mitchell Santner (Chennai Super Kings), Finn Allen (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Glenn Phillips (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Trent Boult (Rajasthan Royals).
