Football World Cup: Argentina forced to abandon homecoming celebrations as millions pack Buenos Aires streets

The Football World Cup-winning Argentina side have been forced to abandon their open-top bus parade in Buenos Aires, as millions of people lined the streets to welcome them home.

Thirty-six years after they last won the Jules Rimet trophy, things got a little out of hand but the party will continue for many days yet, as the entire nation celebrates.

An estimated four million fans marched the streets of the capital and mobbed the Argentina team bus as the celebrations stepped up a gear.

The excitement was at times too much for the football-mad nation.

Any spot is a good spot if it means getting a glimpse of their heroes and the trophy. Some even perched atop the iconic Obelisco de Buenos Aires.

But the hype soon turned to hysteria.

Fans swarmed the bus and slowed it down, while some even took a leap of faith and tried to get a bit too close to the action.

Battered and bruised, fans kept singing but the Argentina bus stopped moving.

The crowds were too dense, so the team took to the skies to continue their tour in a helicopter.

The view from above would have been a remarkable one, and capped off a big day, a well-earned break for Lionel Messi and co.

Argentina's captain didn't let the World Cup out of his sight, while outside the party goes on.
