Football World Cup: Ecstatic Argentinians take over Auckland pub, Waiheke Island roundabout to celebrate victory

Jubilant Auckland-based Argentina fans are celebrating after their side claimed a dramatic victory in a penalty shootout in a topsy-turvy World Cup final.

In a tense and roller-coaster match played in Qatar in front of some 88,000 fans, Argentina, led by star Lionel Messi, took home the South American country’s third World Cup after beating France, the defending champions, 4-2 in penalties after drawing 3-3 after extra time. 

Bearing flags, hats and the country's iconic blue-and-white jerseys, Argentines took over The Fox, A London Pub in Auckland to watch the early morning kickoff. 

After Argentina's Gonzalo Montiel scored the fourth penalty to clinch the World Cup title, fans broke out in celebration.

One Argentina fan told Newshub it was an "amazing" game and one of the best she had ever seen.

Another Argentinian fan said: "We are very happy. It was stressful, but we are very happy, very proud". 

For the few French fans at the packed Auckland pub, the dramatic final left them heartbroken but proud of their team. 

"Messi was incredible. We did our best, but that's it," a French fan said.

Another French fan said: "It's the beautiful game right? One goal can change everything, it's a tough game to take. It was good for Messi, but it was tough to take."

Celebrations weren't just seen at the Auckland pub, Argentinian fans also took over a Waiheke Island roundabout.   

Fans bearing flags and Argentina jerseys could be seen celebrating and dancing on Ocean View Rd in Oneroa.
