Football World Cup: Uruguay star Luis Suarez breaks down in tears after elimination

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has been left in tears, as his side exited the Football World Cup, despite a 2-0 victory over Ghana.

Despite a Giorgian de Arrascaeta double gifting Uruguay their first win of the tournament, South Korea's shock victory over Portugal was enough for the Taeguk Warriors to advance to the second round.

Both tied on four points and a goal difference of exactly zero, South Korea qualified for the next round courtesy of goals scored, with their four superior to Uruguay's two.

And once the final whistle sounded, the news that Uruguay were on the plane home was enough to see their star forward break down in tears.

Meanwhile, in ugly scenes, the rest of Uruguay's squad surrounded the referee and match officials in protest, after they were denied a penalty, when a Daniel Amartey handball went unpunished.

Ghana were also eliminated from the tournament, as Portugal joined South Korea in the second round.

At the age of 35, Suarez has likely attended his last World Cup for Uruguay, leaving a chequered past on football's biggest stage.

In 2010, Suarez was shown a straight red card in Uruguay's quarter-final victory over Ghana, after deliberately handling the ball to deny his opposition a goal.

Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty, as Uruguay claimed a 4-2 shootout victory to advance to the semi-final. Without Suarez, they were beaten 3-2 by the Netherlands in their semi-final and 3-2 by Germany for third.

In 2014, Suarez was banned from football for four months, after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during poolplay of the World Cup in Brazil.

The bite was Suarez's third in professional football, after also biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal playing for Ajax in 2010 and doing the same to Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, while playing for Liverpool in 2013.

With Suarez banned from the 2014 World Cup, Uruguay lost to Colombia in the round of 16.

In 2011 Suarez was also suspended for eight matches, after he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.
