Blackcaps v Sri Lanka: New Zealand confirm debutant duo Chad Bowes, Rachin Ravindra for opening ODI against Sri Lanka

The Blackcaps will welcome a pair of debutants into the fold for their opening one-dayer against Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Batter Chad Bowes and allrounder Rachin Ravindra will both make their first appearances in the 50-over format. Bowes will open the batting alongside Finn Allen, while Ravindra will slot in at No.7.

The squad is without several first-choice players due to injury or Indian Premier League duties, giving fringe members a chance to impress, before the World Cup in India later this year.

South African-born Bowes helped Canterbury to the Super Smash T20 domestic crown this summer and scored 126 off 108 balls in his most recent Ford Trophy one-day outing.

Ravindra has featured at test level and Twenty20 level for the Blackcaps but will get his first taste of the 50-over format this weekend.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra has shown huge improvement with the bat recently, scoring a century for Wellington in the Ford Trophy in January. Last year, he notched a first-class double century for Durham in last year's England County Championship.

He was brought into the squad to replace Michael Bracewell, who received a late call-up to the IPL's Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Bowler Ben Lister was also added to the group, after Lockie Ferguson was forced to withdraw with injury.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham expects both Bowes and Ravindra to make the most of their chances.

"I think it's an exciting opportunity for them," said Latham. "Both of those guys will lean on those experiences they had early on in the summer.

"They've got the full backing of the squad to come in and do their job in conditions they're familiar with, playing domestic cricket here in New Zealand for a long period of time.

"We're excited for them to have another opportunity at some point throughout the next couple of weeks here, but also heading into a series in Pakistan as well."

The rest of the starting XI will be confirmed after the toss on Saturday.
