Cricket: Blackcaps' Kane Williamson moves to world's No.2 ranked test batter after man-of-the-series display against Sri Lanka

Fresh from his man-of-the-series performance in the Blackcaps' 2-0 victory against Sri Lanka, Kane Williamson has moved up to No.2 in the ICC's test batting rankings.

Williamson, 32, scored 337 runs in three innings during the series at an average of 168.50, with two centuries.

In the first test of the series at Christchurch's Hagley Oval, Williamson anchored New Zealand's run chase on the final day with an unbeaten 121 runs, before setting up the Blackcaps' push for an innings victory in Wellington with a masterful 215.

Since giving up the test captaincy at the end of 2022, Williamson has struck four centuries - two of them doubles - with 756 runs at an average of 94.50.

As a result, the former Blackcaps captain has risen four spots in the ICC's test batting rankings, climbing up to second place and leapfrogging the quartet of Steve Smith, Joe Root, Babar Azam and Travis Head.

Only Australia's Marnus Labuschagne sits higher than Williamson on current rankings.

Elsewhere, Henry Nicholls' return to form - scoring an unbeaten 200 of his own in Wellington - has brought with it a rise of 20 ranking spots, now sitting in 27th place.

In the bowlers' rankings, Blackcaps captain Tim Southee has moved up to No.11 in the world, sitting one place outside the top 10.
