Cricket: Trent Boult ignored as Blackcaps, White Ferns stars picked up in English 'The Hundred' draft

A host of Blackcaps and White Ferns have secured contracts for England's 'The Hundred' competition, while star bowler Trent Boult was overlooked by the eight franchises.

As the draft for the 2023 season was held on Friday morning (NZ time), three Blackcaps were drafted, joining three players already contracted.

Boult was listed in the category's second bracket, for NZ$147,000, but was passed over for the likes of Shaheen Afridi of Pakistan, England's Reece Topley, and Australia's Nathan Ellis.

Devon Conway, 31, was drafted in the third round for $147,000, and will return to Southern Brave who he previously played for in 2021.

Fellow Blackcaps opener Finn Allen is already at the Brave, after he was picked up for the 2022 season on a NZ$98,000 contract.

Glenn Phillips will also return to the competition on a $147,000 contract to rejoin Welsh Fire, who he also played for in the competition's inaugural season in 2021.

Also drafted in the third round was all-rounder Michael Bracewell, who was picked up for $147,000 by Northern Superchargers - the same side as England test captain Ben Stokes.

Fast bowler Adam Milne remains with Birmingham Phoenix on a $98,000 deal, while Colin Munro remains with Trent Rockets on a $117,000 contract.

However, despite his availability after walking away from his New Zealand Cricket contract mid last year, Trent Boult was overlooked by the eight sides, along with Pakistan captain Babar Azam.

Since giving up his contract, Boult has already played for Melbourne Stars and Mumbai Indians Emirates in Australia and the UAE respectively, and will turn out for Rajasthan Royals in this year's Indian Premier League.

In the women's competition, White Ferns captain Sophie Devine was retained by Birmingham Phoenix - who drafted the 33-year-old in 2022.

Teammates Amelia Kerr and Suzie Bates will also play in the competition, after being signed by Amelia Kerr and Oval Invincibles last year.

The Hundred is English cricket's newest format, shortening a Twenty20 match to 100 balls per side, instead of the standard 120.

The competition runs from August 1 to 28 this year, while the Blackcaps begin their tour of England on August 31, playing four T20 internationals and three ODIs.
