Football: Wellington Phoenix edge closer to A-League playoffs with victory over Sydney FC

Oskar Zawada's first-half goal has propelled Wellington Phoenix to a valuable 1-0 win over A-League rivals Sydney FC, maintaining an unbeaten record at their Auckland home-away-from-home of Eden Park.

The Polish striker rose high in the goalmouth to head a cross from Lucas Mauragis past Socceroos World Cup hero Andrew Redmayne to break the deadlock in the 21st minute and his team frustrated the five-time champions, as keeper Oli Sail achieved another clean sheet.

The result consolidates Wellington's playoff hopes, boosting them into a threeway tie for third, but lagging Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers behind on goal difference.

The outcome also puts some space between them and Sydney - their nearest pursuers - with Newcastle Jets now seven points behind.

"Very, very tough game for us today," said captain Alex Rufer. "The boys put in a massive shift and we're buzzing with the three points."

The Phoenix have now played 10 times at Eden Park, without tasting defeat.

"It's our fortress," said Rufer. "Obviously, Sky Stadium [Wellington] is where we want to play, but when we come up here, unbeaten, it's amazing.

"We just need to keep this going."

Zawada, who is currently on babywatch, netted his 12th goal of the season, tying for second behind Melbourne City's Jamie Maclaren (18).

"The fact he's playing this game shows how much commitment he has for this team, so he deserve everything he gets," said Rufer. "What a goal."

The Phoenix now face Adelaide on Friday, when a win would put them level with the team in second on the table.
