Motorsport: Kiwi BMX legend Sarah Walker on crash course for rally debut at Otago

Kiwi BMX rider Sarah Walker is trading in handlebars for a steering wheel.

The former world champion and Olympic silver medalist will make her rallying debut, when she slips behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza at the Otago Rally later this month.

In her first drive in the car, yes, she already delivered its first dent.

Suiting up for motorsport isn't entirely foreign territory for Walker.

"It's a bit different from putting on a BMX helmet," she said.

Converting from two wheels to four on the gravel has been on the bucket list for a while.

"Absolutely, yes please, put me in, I want to try it," Walker said.

She now has that chance, put through her paces by co-driver and instructor Grant Marra, and on a crash course to be ready for Rally Otago in four weeks.

"I did BMX for 20-plus years and this is day two, so similar, but also completely different," Walker said.

The test came with some battle scars.

"Like bounced off the fence hahaha and [I was] like sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry," Walker said.

"The car reacted a bit differently to what she thought it was gonna do, and the fence came and said hello to us," Marra said.

"Hopefully, it just didn't cost too much money," Walker said.

The answer to that question probably lies with the car's owner, Jeff Judd.

"At least on these cars, the guards just bolt on, unlike the Escorts, where they're welded on," he said. "We'll just bolt that, put another one on and maybe paint a blue one, if we haven't got one in stock."

A little panelwork won't put off this adrenaline junky.

"It's so fun, and it's scary and exhilarating, and all the things I love about BMX," Walker said.

If she's half as good in the car as she is on the bike, Rally Otago may not be a one-off.
