NRL: High-flying Manly Sea Eagles add to Parramatta Eels' woes in Sydney tryfest

  • 17/03/2023

Manly Sea Eagles have continued their undefeated start to the NRL season with a 34-30 victory over Parramatta Eels in Sydney on Thursday.

The hosts clinched the match in the 77th minute with an intercept try to Haumole Olakau'atu, who claimed his second of the night, before Maika Sivo ran in a late consolation score for the Eels.

The results means last year's beaten finalists remain without a win to start the 2023 NRL season, while the Sea Eagles recorded their first consecutive victories since last July to sit atop the NRL ladder.

The hosts started the stronger of the two sides, with Tom Trbojevic running in the first of his two tries in a dominant opening 20 minutes.

But Manly's errors slowly began to mount, allowing the Eels to strike twice in quick succession to take a 14-10 lead into the break.

The second half followed a similar format, with the Sea Eagles running in three tries to threaten to run away with the contest.

Sivo and Josh Hodgson provided an Eels double strike in the space of three minutes to give their side the momentum, before Olakau'atu provided the match-clinching late try.

Parramatta now return home to host Penrith Panthers in a replay of last year's grand final, while the Sea Eagles head to Accor Stadium to face South Sydney Rabbitohs.
