Newly recrowned middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has given his own version of what happened in the Octagon, during his career-defining UFC 287 victory over archrival Alex Pereira at Miami.
After losing his crown against the Brazilian last November - his third career loss to Pereira - the Kiwi-Nigerian fighter reversed that result in stunning fashion, with a second-round knockout to regain his crown.
Adesanya, 33, has since taken time to reflect on the occasion, posting his candid commentary over footage of the fight on YouTube. Among the revelations is his pre-fight pact with reputed UFC referee Dan Miragliotta, who presided over the bout.
"I'm glad it was Dan," he said. "I'm glad Dan listened to me.
"He didn't give me any rules. I just told him, 'Look, if I put him on the ground, if he's flat out, let me have my moment... I'm not going to touch him, but let me have my moment... I've been waiting since 2017 for this'.
"He said, 'You got it, bro'. That's all he said - he just gave me that respect.
"Some guys would be, like, 'Hey, that's enough', and ruin the f**king moment. I've seen it in boxing and MMA, they make it about them.
"I told him, 'I'm not going to hurt him... I'm not going to touch him, I just want to have my moment'. I'm glad he gave me that, because then I had a fine moment off it."
The video includes footage of Adesanya training the exact sequence of blows that led to Pereira's downfall, after he lured his opponent onto the frontfoot.
"He got so comfortable," he said. "I wanted him to get comfortable throwing with reckless abandonment.
"He thinks I'm a punching bag now that he can tee off on, but I'm not like the other guys you fight with.
"I came off the fence... that was the axe from heaven."
Another admission from Adesanya - he has never actually watched the movie Frozen, despite his "frozen like Elsa" taunts.
