Kiwi Liam Lawson has become the first driver in the modern era of Super Formula to win on his debut, after besting teammate and two-time champion Tomoki Nojiri.

Lawson led by more than five seconds clear of the rest of the field at Fuji, when the safety car was deployed following a collision.

The race would end with the safety car in front, allowing Lawson to take home the chequered flag unchallenged for a historic victory.

Lawson admits he still can't believe what he's achieved, after becoming the first driver to win on his debut since the start of the modern era in 1996.

"It's not really sunk in yet, honestly," he told Motorsport.com post-race."Very happy with the result, but talking about the history, it's not something I had thought about beforehand.

"It's cool to have that now, but before the race, you just focus on doing the best job possible. If you look at that stuff, you can get ahead of yourself."
